Hi! My name is Grace, and I’m a rising senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
The idea for NeuroZAP began in quiet conversations at local nursing homes. During my visits, I met residents who were kind, funny, and full of stories, but I also noticed how often loneliness shaped their daily lives. Some residents lived in small, crowded rooms. Others had limited access to technology, engaging activities, or health resources. And many simply wanted someone to sit with them, listen, and spend time together.
At the same time, I had seen how neurological disorders can affect people close to me, from family members to friends. Those experiences made brain health feel personal, not just as a medical topic, but as something connected to independence and quality of life.
NeuroZAP grew from both of these experiences. I wanted to create a project that raises awareness about neurological disorders and brain health while also offering something fun and engaging. Through activity kits (ZAP kits), educational resources, and community outreach, NeuroZAP helps seniors stay mentally engaged and feel less alone.
My hope is that NeuroZAP can bring awareness, support, and connection into the community in a way that is meaningful and lasting.
NeuroZAP is dedicated to making brain health education more accessible, engaging, and meaningful through hands-on community outreach. We aim to fundraise and distribute activity kits and informational guidebooks, while also encouraging other volunteers to visit local retirement centers and spend time with seniors through games, crafts, and interactive activities. By supporting cognitive engagement and building connections across generations, we hope to promote brain health and make seniors feel seen and supported.
Our guidebook is designed to be a simple, helpful resource that introduces key topics in brain health in an easy-to-understand way. It includes information about lifestyle habits, hands-on activities, and tips that encourage learning and meaningful engagement for students, families, and older adults. We also plan to expand it into additional languages over time so it can be accessible to more people and communities!
